Low Light and Night Photos

Photography is all about light.  Whether there is lots of light or very little light, this is what the film negative or digital sensor collects and interprets as an image.  So if you have a tripod, it cam be really fun to experiment and see what you can come up with in situations when the light is scarce.  One if the cool things about newer digital cameras is their ability to tolerate high iso’s enabling the artist to do even more in these situatioms.  The first couple of pictures were shot at 3200 ISO approximately 30 minutes after sunset,  They were shot with a 50mm lens at f/1.4.

The next two shots were bulb exposures of about 7 minutes each.  You can see the movement in the stars.  In the first exposure below, the ocean looks kind of eerie.  Very cool effect…

in the exposure below, the lights from town on the horizon create a nice silhouette for the view platform.  I like how you can see the different colors in the stars.  It was getting really foggy so I had to bring my camera in, but if I could have kept the exposure going for a few hours, it would have made for some killer star trails.  You can see how the stars are rotating around the North Star.

More from Cayucos…and Cambria

One of my favorite towns is Cambria.  I think I like it so much because there’s just enough there for the family to wander around for the afternoon and have fun, but not be overwhelmed.  There’s some great little stores and great looking old buildings.  Plus, it’s just over the hill from the ocean and a little more protected from the weather.  It seems like everytime I’ve been there, it’s 70 degrees.  We have stopped at Linn’s Farm up the road many times, but this was our first time enjoying their family restaurant in town.  Seriously, best burger I’ve ever had.  Made with nothing but grass fed beef, fresh garlic, smoked gouda…unreal!  Here’s Ian polishing off a plate of ribs.

They also have a great candy store in town, Sweet Offerings, that we visit every time. They make amazing truffles, which happen to be a weakness of mine.

oh my…

A local entertainer…he was great because every song he played, it was at double speed!  “heymistertambourinemanplayasongforme” :)

That’s it for now…

Trip to Cayucos – Harmony, Population 18

One of the things that I love so much about the Central Coast of California is the blend of small town America with the ocean.  It’s so different from Southern California where a beach community means multi million dollar homes and 5 star restaurants…which isn’t bad either!  But I love the country more than anything and when it’s ocean front, it’s even better.

We always like to spend a day driving around to some of our favorite spots.  One place that I’ve driven past many times but never turned off Hwy 1 to check out is the town of Harmony.

Harmony has some interesting history.  But it also has some great old buildings with awesome textures and color.

I love these two shots of my girls!

That’s it for today…more tomorrow!!

Cayucos Trip – April 2010 – Part 1

Over the past couple of years, I’ve had the opportunity to take a number of family trips up the Central Coast to the little town of Cayucos.  We stay with family when we go which makes it even better, though it’s hard to improve on paradise!  I absolutely love it up there.  While the setting is absolutely gorgeous, I also love the small town feel.  The lack of a Starbucks or any other recognizable chain restaurant adds to it’s charm.  You start appreciating the SLO Roasted Coffee and the homemade sticky buns at Kelly’s coffee and the insanely delicious treats at the Brown Butter Cookie Company.  It is a great place to spend time with family and it’s an absolutely perfect place to tote your camera around! So I thought I’d start off with some landscapes and critters…

We were blessed with incredible weather…blue skies and warm days.  But that tends to make for less than interesting sunsets.  I think the rocks and the water make up for the lack of cloud formations though.

The Cayucos Pier at Sunset

I love the motion in this shot

Sea urchin skeleton?

Sand Pipers

Snowy Plover

Lots of squirrels hang around Morro Rock, looking for handouts.

I could literally sit and watch Sea Otters for hours.  I’m pretty easy to please.

I’ll continue tomorrow with more photos from our trip!
